I woke up this morning knowing that a bomb had exploded in the capitol of my country, a bomb had gone of in Oslo, Norway, and people had died.
I knew that a man dressed as a police officer had gone to Utøya where the Norwegian youth of one political party were gathered. They had debates, played sports, performed, had speeches and fought for the future they wanted to take part in. I knew that the fake police officer had shot people there.
What I did not know when I woke up this morning was that the man behind the bomb and the shooting was the one and the same. He is Norwegian, and they described him as being very nationalistic and against multi cultured societies.
What I did not know was that 7 were killed in the explosion and 84 people shot at Utøya. The politicians call it an attack on our democracy and youth.
I know worse tragedies happen all the time, and they move you when they occur. I’ve never been unaffected by hearing about cars being exploded, tsunamis and hurricanes running rampant. But hearing about this tragedy, in my own country was a shock.
I’ve always considered Norway to sort of be the Shire in Middle Earth, why would anyone bother to attack such a small, insignificant country? Sure the country is rich but still? What do we have? Oil? Oil isn’t going to help us for long, we’ll need to be able to do without oil in the near future. Fish? I can’t say that I believe that will secure our finances…
My thoughts run out to all those who lost someone yesterday, to everyone who were there when it all happened. Norway may not be an important country, but pain is pain, and my country has never experienced something like this before. Hopefully the number of casualties won’t get much bigger.
I just hope that there will be some good coming out of this tragedy in the end. That we all learn something from it. Evil exists and I hope we will stop ignoring it. And I hope that we will prove it to the horrible person who did this, that he was wrong. That racism is wrong, and that we will unite and come out of this being stronger than we were.
